WRITING | HOME
I’ve been writing since I was six years old. My first published story was for the Summerhill School newsletter in 1973. This was a story about an alien monster frozen in arctic ice. It was inspired by the original movie version of ‘The Thing’; I even did a drawing to go with it. I’ve always written and always wanted to be a writer, I got the bug from my dad.
I see writing as a way to communicate key stuff I’ve got going on inside me, clearly to the outside world. I have a fear of being misunderstood, so words on the page, carefully thought out, carefully constructed are often the best way for me to say exactly what I mean. I do this through any medium that feels right at the time: fiction, non fiction, journalism, screenplays etc.
I’ve always felt a pressure to find a calling. If I have one, then this is it. I choose my attachment to my success in writing, and where it’s taking me, to be a loose one. Very zen.
